Many hearts, young and old, were broken when the news of the beloved Club Penguin website was shutting down. Club Penguin is a massive multiplayer online (MMO) game, owned by Disney, designed to allow children to play games with others and interact with the penguin avatars in-game. When the news broke, outrage arose across the internet. Young fans of club penguin were sad to see it go, and nostalgic teens and adults protested the abandonment of the Club Penguin site. They signed petitions and posted their complaints on social media, but Disney was silent.
“NOT TO BE DRAMATIC BUT THIS IS LITERALLY THE WORST NEWS I’VE EVER GOTTEN. EVER,” said Twitter user Ginapple.
But why is Disney shutting down such a popular and beloved game? Some fans will be relieved to hear that the Club Penguin brand isn’t going away forever. Disney is launching a new version of the game, the day after the original is shut down. The new game, Club Penguin Island, will run on a 3D game engine, which will provide faster playing speeds and better graphics, compared to the original game that ran on Adobe Flash Player.
Some Club Penguin fans still aren’t thrilled about the new developments. Club Penguin island doesn’t have the same features as the original, including the non-member features that plenty of users took advantage of. Club Penguin Island membership will cost even more than it did in Club Penguin, prices hiking up to 250% in places like India.
Club Penguin shuts down March 28th, and Club Penguin Island opens its doors March 29th.
